After the season 1978-79, four teams from the WHA, including the Alberta oil (which would become the Edmonton Oilers), joined the National Hockey League. The three other teams in the WHA Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers. In his first NHL season, 1979-80, Gretzky won the Hart Trophy as MVP of the league (the first of eight in a row) and tied led all scorers with Marcel Dionne with 137 points (Dionne won the Art Ross Trophy as top scorer in the league because he had scored more goals, despite Gretzky played fewer games). Gretzky was not eligible for the Calder trophy, awarded to the best rookie in NHL because of his previous year of professional experience. The rule, however, was changed several years later. Teemu Selanne is an example this rule change. He won the rookie of the year with 76 goals, despite already had professional experience.
In its second season, Gretzky won the Art Ross (the first of seven consecutive years), single season record 164 points and won his second Hart Trophy. The Oilers have a young team, with Mark Messier Strong forward Glenn Anderson and Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey defense, goaltender Grant Fuhr, and Gretzky as captain. In 1983 he was in the final of the Stanley Cup, before being swept by the triple champion, the New York Islanders. The following season, Oilers met the Islanders in the finals again, this time won the first of his four Stanley Cups over the next five years.
