Hockey Skates Skates
Is it better for kids to learn to skate with figure skates or hockey skates?

My 3 year old wants to learn how to skate and eventually play hockey, but would it be better to teach her with figure skates first?

Since she is only 3, I would recommend putting her in figure skates first. Figure skates provide a little more stability. The toe pick helps kids get back up when they fall down. It is easier to learn the basics in figure skates and then switch to hockey skates. Definitely have her wear a helmet when she’s on the ice.

If you are putting her in a learn to skate class, have her in figure skates for Tot 1 & 2 or Snowplow 1, whichever your rink uses, and switch to hockey skates for Tot 3 & 4 or Snowplow 2 & 3.
